Pity me

We should not pity those we pity
for it is they who pity us
We’re the pitiful pitying the pitied
without realising we’re to be pitied
For those who have everything
have nothing at all
and those who have nothing
have more than us all.

I pity myself
for the wretched dreams
of unreal love and unhappiness
at the expense of my own soul
And I reach out at straws
grasping in angst
for one line of reason
to hold me above.

Pity me, I ask
For none such as I
would look at the sky
and believe I could fly.
